They took away the bikes. The terrorists started walking. And the Malian Armed Forces were waiting.
Mali’s ban on motorcycle movement, a policy that many outside observers dismissed as too simple to make a difference, has just delivered a major security result. A terrorist group attempting to reach the Mauritanian border was intercepted on foot after being forced to abandon their motorcycles in the bush.
Among those caught was a senior JNIM communication official and Alhad Ag Alhassan, an actively wanted lieutenant of the FLA. High value targets. Neutralized. Not by foreign drones. Not by Western special forces. By Malian soldiers acting on Malian intelligence executing a Malian strategy.
This matters more than it looks.
For years Africa was told that its security problems required Western solutions. French troops. American training. European funding. The message was always the same. You cannot protect yourselves without us.
Mali said no. France left. The experts predicted collapse. The headlines were written in advance.

The same Western governments who armed and trained these terrorist networks for decades, who used instability as a reason to stay, who called Mali’s new leadership dangerous, are watching a country they wrote off start to win.
