Abia: Otti Has Not Done Much

By Emenike Vincent Onyembi

Have you ever wondered why so many people in Abia and beyond, celebrate Governor Otti? Some people do not understand it. They ask, “Why him? Why all this praise?” But when you look closely, the answer becomes very clear.

Come with me.

Governor Otti is a sharp, thoughtful leader. He does not just guess or act on feelings. He studies things carefully. He looks at facts. He examines research. He wants to understand what is truly going on before he makes a move. That is rare. That is valuable. That is exactly the kind of leadership we need more of.

I once told a member of my study group, “If I ever get the chance to work under Governor Otti, I would choose a role focused on R & D”. Why? Because he is a leader who actually values scientific evidence. He does not just talk about progress, he studies the path to it.

Let me share a personal memory. Four years ago, I met Governor Otti for the first time. It was in Abuja, at the NAF Conference Center. He had been invited to speak at the very first “Gown to Town” event organized by the Uniport Alumni Association, Abuja Chapter. I was one of the people who ushered him into the hall.

At that time, I did not feel completely free to admire him. Why? Because the 2023 elections were close, and I already had my own preferred candidate—Okey Ahiwe. So I kept my distance, emotionally. But even then, I could not ignore the quality of his speech. It was well written, carefully researched. And when he spoke, the hall erupted with applause. Not once. Over and over. A moment that stayed with me.

Even after he became governor, he did not forget us. He still reaches out to the Uniport Alumni Association, Abuja Chapter. That kind of consistency says a lot about a person.

Oh yes, it does.

Now, let me say something clearly. I am one of those who believe Governor Otti has not yet done everything he can since May 2023. Far from it. But here is the key; He has TOUCHED the right things. He has put his hands on the issues that truly matter to the people.

I wrote this before, and I will say it again, Governor Otti touched the soft spot of Nde Aba. That is why his acceptance has been so real, so natural, so deeply felt. I am from Aba, Aba South, to be exact. So, I do not need any fortune-teller to tell me what true progress looks like in my own hometown.

Let me be plain, there is no governor can truly claim to have fixed Aba if roads like Port Harcourt, Ohanku, Obohia, Omuma, Uratta, and Old Express remain in ruins. I stand to be corrected. These are not minor roads. These are lifelines. These roads carry the movement, the ‘economy’, the daily survival of thousands.

Whoever fixes these roads will not be forgotten. Their name will be spoken in Aba and across Abia for generations. I do not know exactly what convinced Governor Alex Otti to pay attention to these specific roads. But I know this—he has done something timeless. He has given his name a legacy that cannot be erased. Even if he does nothing else in Aba, and we hope he does much more, these roads will speak for him long after today.

That is why you now hear people on the streets of Aba joking, “Governor, take some money from Abia Pulse and enjoy yourself small.” That is not just humor. That is love. That is what happens when a leader touches the soft spot of the people. It is the highest form of approval.

Governor Otti is not just smart. He is deliberate. He knows what he wants and he moves toward it with clarity. One quality I admire deeply in him is his decisiveness. This is something every aspiring leader must learn. If you cannot make decisions with confidence, you will achieve nothing when leadership is placed in your hands. Indecision is a silent killer of progress.

Here is the truth, what Governor Otti is doing in Abia is not rocket science. It is simple. It is doable. But it requires something many leaders lack—the discipline to plan and the courage to stay focused on that plan. He has a clear vision. He hires capable professionals to help him achieve it. And then he steps back and lets the work happen. That is all it takes. Yet so many miss it.

Now, imagine what is coming next. Governor Otti is already working to restore the iconic Enyimba Hotel, seated proudly at the heart of Aba, on a landscape so beautiful you cannot help but pause and admire it before crossing the waterside bridge. When that project is complete, his name will be carved even deeper into the history of this state.

The truth is simple; Governance does not have to be complicated. It just has to be thoughtful. It has to be rooted in evidence. It has to be decisive. And above all, it has to touch the people where they live, where they struggle, where they hope.

Governor Otti has not done much but he deserves every word of praise he receives. Not because he is perfect. Not because he has finished the work. But because he started the right work. Because he has placed his hands on the wounds that have bled longest.

No cap. No exaggeration. Just respect for a man who is showing us what leadership can look like when it is done with care, with evidence, with heart and with commitment.
