“Our desires are often fleeting and misguided. We may fervently pursue something, only to realize later that it was not worth the effort.”
As I sit here, reminiscing about my past, I am reminded of the fleeting nature of desire. Years ago, my greatest aspiration was to become a secondary school principal, inspired by my father’s legacy as a renowned teacher and my former principal, Rev. Father B. A. Ekechukwu. I idolized his seemingly perfect life – a stable job, comfortable lifestyle, and respected position in society.
However, life had other plans. Despite studying Biology/Healthcare Education, I found myself drawn to computer coding, accounting, and business strategies. My passion for teaching waned, and I began to view it as a less desirable career path.
As I look back, I am grateful for the twists and turns that have shaped my journey. I recall my first year in school, when I had a crush on a girl but lacked the courage to express my feelings. Today, I am thankful that I never mustered the confidence to approach her.
I also remember my desire for a Motorola “Razor” phone, which seemed like the ultimate status symbol at the time. I even sent out prayer requests, asking God to provide me with one. Now, the thought of using that phone seems quaint and amusing.
This reflection has taught me that our desires are often fleeting and misguided. We may fervently pursue something, only to realize later that it was not worth the effort. This is a universal truth that applies to all aspects of life, from relationships and careers to material possessions and wealth.
So, what is your most pressing desire today? Is it a new car, a bigger house, or a romantic partner? Whatever it may be, remember that someday you will look back and realize that it was not as important as you thought.
In the grand scheme of life, it is essential to maintain perspective and prioritize what truly matters. As the saying goes, “the grass is always greener on the other side,” but often, it is only when we reach the other side that we realize the grass was not as green as we thought.
So, take a deep breath, calm down, and focus on the present moment. Life is a journey, not a destination. And as you navigate its twists and turns, remember that your desires will evolve, and what seems essential today may become insignificant tomorrow.
