Beijing's Miss Plus Size International flaunts beauty in shapes and sizes
"beauty is far beyond how much you weigh on the scale. It is diversified, and plus-size women are beautiful too."
It takes more than sex appeal to do the catwalk for requirement other than sleek and beauty-these are women of confidence who have braced all odds of diets and criticism to flaunt the best that makes them outstanding at any occasion. The plus size women!
There is beauty and sex appeal in the big size women not celebrated often especially here in China or across Asia where to be 'big size' or in the common adage 'fat' is attached with derogatory allusions.
This is where the organizer, Dr.Samantha Sibanda, herself a Plus size icon had thrown in a balance -"beauty is far beyond how much you weigh on the scale. It is diversified, and plus-size women are beautiful too."
One thing the organisers perhaps forgot to make reference is “the size matter” regional preference-in certain regions in Africa, the plus sized women are preferable, in most cases, the Calabar women of South East Nigeria will have to attend a 'fattening' class before she could be considered eligible for marriage.
This is one of the benefits of cross-cultural relation as China welcomes a mix of foreign culture, the stigma attached with being a 'plus size' lady in China is fast eroding as the event witnessed two Chinese contestants whom actually stole the show and thrilled the audience.
Ms Na Yuan, Vice Chairperson of the Commonwealth Society of Beijing (CSB) and co-organizer of the event said the competition grew out of a need to provide plus-sized women with positive role models that look like them.
"As a plus-sized woman myself and according to my years of observation, I saw that many plus-sized ladies around the world, especially in China, were being discriminated against and feel unhappy about themselves. Some even suffer from depression," the first staging of the event was meant to be a wake-up call, the message was well received, both by the target demographic-the women -and by the wider society therefore we came up with the idea of repeating the event this year.
The China experience of being plus-sized
it's even more difficult being plus-sized in China, said Dr. Sibanda, compared to foreigners, most Chinese people are relatively small sized. There is often very little tolerance for plus-sized women in the city therefore everybody looks so skinny, and people get brainwashed into thinking everyone should look like that, but that's not real and natural. Our Chinese contestants had even more bitter experiences to share. People automatically assume that there is not much you can do because you are big size and they put you off.
This year, 13 well groomed young women had succeeded to the finals to appear on the stage out of over 70 applications compared to last year where only 50 contestants filed applications that indicates improvement as the ballroom of Beijing Marriot Hotels was filled to the brim with over 500 guests compared to last year of only 400. We expect something even much bigger next year.
"If you look at China, a lot of successful Chinese women have done many things to appear slim but they don't look like super models; would it not be better to relish in your personal achievement than worry about looking like the girl in the street." said Na Yuan.
This will have to stop through this platform "Only when the public and people no longer look at plus-sized women with mixed feelings of admiration and shock, will I be able to say that this event has served its purpose and for a Chinese woman to win the 2016 Miss Plus Size, for me it is an achievement in line with our goals- It means the Chinese women are beginning to appreciate themselves for who she is and what she stands for.
